Suddenly Single. New City. Unemployed.
It was the late 90’s. I was living out West, in a dead-end job, in my early 30’s – and found myself suddenly single. I jumped at a job offer back East, partly to get away, and partly to start a new life. Six months later, I was laid off. Great. New city. Don’t know anyone. Now unemployed. And broke. Moving expenses. First and last month’s rent. Lingering student debt. An auto loan.

And still single.

Sam Seeking Soulmate
While searching for another job, I discovered these new Internet personals services that were popping up. These were for the desperate, the lonely, the socially dysfunctional, and the strange. Or so I thought.

Curiosity got the better of me and, with lots of time on my hands, I discovered a niche site catering to Christian singles. Finally, my background. Striking up the courage, I started to meet local women and then women from all over.

I drove to Tifton, Georgia once. 19 hours, straight. I drove two days another time to Dallas. Yet another time, straight through to Nashville.

Hmmm. All these women were normal, attractive, well adjusted. And, using online dating for any number of legitimate reasons: small town, not enough available men; large town, hard to get to know people; everyone in their church was married. Heck, some were dating in the “real world” and doing this for fun.

Build a Better Mouse-Trap
That got my business mind thinking. A friend remarked one day, “You aren’t looking for a job, you’re on these dating sites all day long, and you keep saying how you could do a better job. Build a better mouse-trap!"

So, with my brother’s help, a new dating site, ChristianCafe.com, was born. It launched in early 1999. Along the way, I was introduced to a young lady through a woman I had met on another dating service in 1998. Polly was from Brazil and practising her English in Toronto. She needed a job, once her studies were done.

Singlehood Doomed
Polly came to work for me in the Autumn of 1999. She was talented. Well educated. Attractive. But, I was too busy to notice that last part. The demand for ChristianCafe.com was exploding. 100 hour workweeks were the norm. Polly helped grow the company from a small niche player to a multi-million dollar business.

One night, some friends had a costume party. Polly was dressed as a cocktail waitress. During the party, a friend and I looked at her. We looked at each other. Then back at Polly. Scales dropped from my eyes. She’s been here for two years! How could I miss this beauty sitting beside me every day? What? She’s been trying to get my attention for six months now? Why didn’t anyone tell me!

We dated for two years and were married in 2003 – in my living room. We spent three weeks in Tahiti on our honeymoon. Four islands. Six resorts. Finished in Bora Bora. Ahhhh.

Marriage, two sets of twins, two million Christian singles
Fast forward to 2010. ChristianCafe.com is into its 12th year online. Over two million Christian singles have created accounts with us over the years.

Polly and I have been married for six-and-a-half years now. And, had boy/girl twins – twice(!). Cyrus and Cheyenne are four-and-a-half. Paris and Xerxes are one.

What we do for a living has affected us personally in ways that most people never experience. Never mind the double twin sets!
